Job descriptions tell you the duties. They don't tell you the rhythm. Here's a composite commercial-construction day, assembled from how journeymen actually describe the work — the details vary by sector, but the shape of the day is recognizable everywhere.
5:45 AM — Gate
Commercial sites start early. Park, badge in, grab the tool bag out of the gang box. The general contractor's board says which floors are hot zones today — the schedule shifted overnight, because it always shifts overnight.
6:00 AM — Stretch and Flex, Then the Plan
Toolbox talk with the foreman: today's scope is rough-in on level three — bending and hanging conduit runs off the lighting plan, pulling homeruns back to the panel room. The foreman flags one change order: the owner moved a wall, which moved four boxes, which moved everything feeding them. Prints get marked up.
6:15 AM — Layout
Before anything gets bent or hung, layout. Measure off the drawings, snap lines, mark box heights. Ten minutes of careful layout saves an hour of rework — the oldest math in the trade. An apprentice shadows, and part of the journeyman's actual job is narrating the why: why this route, why that support spacing, what the code says about it.
7:00–11:30 AM — Production
The long block. Bending EMT, mounting boxes, hanging strut, pulling wire. It's physical but rhythmic — measure, cut, ream, bend, fit, level, strap. The satisfying part of the trade lives here: at 7 a.m. there's a bare deck; by lunch there's a clean conduit rack running dead straight for eighty feet, and you made it exist.
The work is visible. At the end of a day you can point at something that wasn't there in the morning. Not every career gets to say that.
11:30 AM — Lunch
Thirty minutes. Tailgates, shade, the eternal debate about whose bender is out of calibration.
12:00–2:30 PM — The Problem
Every day has one. Today: a duct bank from another trade is occupying the ceiling space the homeruns were routed through. This is the part of the job that's pure thinking — reroute options, fill calculations, support spacing, code clearances, and a conversation with the foreman about which answer doesn't blow the schedule. People imagine the trade is hands; a lot of it is geometry and negotiation.
2:30 PM — Close-Out
Label the pulls, update the as-builts, secure the gang box, note materials running short so the foreman can order ahead. A journeyman who leaves clean information behind is worth two who just leave.
3:00 PM — Gate Out
Nine hours after the first coffee. Some days run over — deadlines and industrial shutdown work bring real overtime, which is where a lot of the pay gap between electricians on the same base rate comes from.
The Honest Fine Print
Residential service days look different (more driving, more customers, more variety per day). Industrial days different again (more troubleshooting, more lockout-tagout discipline). Weather happens.
