Here's the secret about your first year: nobody expects you to know anything. The trade forgives inexperience completely — it's the whole premise of an apprenticeship. What it does not forgive is carelessness, dishonesty, and unreliability. Every mistake below belongs to the second category.
1. Faking Knowledge
The cardinal sin. Nodding along to an instruction you didn't understand, then improvising, creates rework at best and danger at worst. The apprentice who says "show me that again" learns twice as fast and — this surprises people — earns more respect, not less. Journeymen have a finely tuned detector for the bluff. Don't feed it.
2. Being On Time
Not late — on time. On commercial sites, on time is late. The crew that's pouring coffee and loading the cart at 5:50 notices who walks up at 6:00:01. Fifteen minutes early, every day, is the cheapest reputation you will ever buy.
3. The Phone
Checking your phone mid-task reads as disrespect to the journeyman teaching you and as a hazard to everyone else. Pockets until break. This single habit separates apprentices who get invited back from apprentices who get "we'll call you."
4. Treating Safety Rules as Suggestions
Skipping glasses "for a quick cut," reaching into a panel before verification, improvising at height. Year-one apprentices don't get hurt because the work is beyond them — they get hurt doing simple things casually. Nothing you're asked to hurry will ever be worth it. A journeyman who sees you self-enforce safety without being told marks you as trainable; that word travels.
5. Standing Still
The moment your task ends and you stand waiting to be assigned is the moment the foreman's opinion of you forms. Sweep, stage material, coil cords, ask "what's next?" The phrase every apprentice should wear out: "What can I grab?"
6. Taking the Ribbing Personally
You will be sent for things that may or may not exist. You will be teased. Construction crews test new people with humor before trusting them with responsibility — it's crude sorting, but it's sorting. Take it lightly, give a little back, never let it wobble your work. (Real harassment is a different thing entirely, and every legitimate program has a process for it. Know the difference and use the process if you need it.)
7. Neglecting the Classroom Half
Field hours teach hands; class teaches the code, and the code is the license. Apprentices who sleepwalk through related instruction meet that decision again at the journeyman exam, years later, with interest. Treat class night like billable hours — the exam is already coming.
Show up early. Ask real questions. Move with purpose. Respect the current. Do those four things and your inexperience is completely irrelevant — you'll be the apprentice the journeymen argue over.
